London has an endless amount of free activities available for those who visit. Not being a “low budget” city, it is always possible to save some money when taking advantage of these benefits. In these 10 topics of 10 Awesome Things to do are just some of these activities, which I had the opportunity to experience and do recommend.

The Bridges Walk
Walking across some of London’s most iconic bridges along the River Thames can be a really fun way to explore the city. By doing so, you can get different perspectives of the city along the river.
Both banks are accessible by foot, and I suggest starting at Westminster Bridge and zigzagging across the following bridges until you reach Tower Bridge.
Make a longer stop at the Millennium Bridge, a pedestrian-only bridge from where you can see such landmarks of the city as the Tate Modern, The Shakespeare’s Globe, and St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Hyde Park
Located in the heart of London, it is considered one of the lungs of the city.
It is worth a walk through the park to enjoy nature, visit Princess Diana’s Memorial, and perhaps make a speech at Speakers’ Corner, a historic place for speeches and public debates since the mid-1800s, when protests and demonstrations took place in Hyde Park.
Natural History Museum
Immerse yourselves in the history of planet Earth by visiting the Natural History Museum’s galleries, which house unique treasures from the museum’s collection of more than 80 million specimens over 4.5 billion years.

Sky Garden
The Sky Garden is a skyscraper, located in the center of London, from where you have a 360 degree view of the city.
On the top floor, you can walk inside an indoor garden, a kind of greenhouse, and enjoy the breathtaking landscape. I recommend visiting at the end of the afternoon to see the sunset!

Visit the markets
London has countless markets to visit for free. From the best known, such as Portobello Road Market, Camden Market or Covent Garden, to the less touristy but equally spectacular Borough Market.
In this last market, which is mostly food, you can try some different delicacies, such as unusual mushrooms.
Explore Notting Hill
Notting Hill is probably the best known neighborhood in London.
The most colorful and “instagrammable”, the stage for several film productions.
It is worth taking the time to walk around its streets and get to know its corners. Logically, nobody goes to Notting Hill and leaves out the famous bookstore!
Shoreditch urban art
Shoreditch is a less glamorous but equally spectacular neighborhood. You can breathe urban art and bohemian atmosphere there.
Wander the streets and appreciate works by some of the most recognized artists in urban art. It’s like being in an open-air gallery.
St Paul’s Cathedral
Being one of the most emblematic buildings of London, located at the highest point of the city, it is one of the places whose visit is mandatory.
Visiting the exterior and the gardens of the Cathedral is free, as is visiting the central nave. Take the opportunity to be dazzled by the magnificent architecture of the building.
Big Ben
Big Ben is probably the most famous clock in the world. Its silhouette is immediately recognizable and is one of the most photographed landmarks on the planet.
The entire architectural complex consisting of Westminster Bridge, the Palace, and Big Ben is a dazzle to anyone visiting that part of the city.
The Tate Modern
The Tate is a museum/gallery whose mission, as its website describes, is to enhance the public’s enjoyment and understanding of British art from the 16th century to the present day and of modern and contemporary international art.
Don’t miss a visit of the artworks, but also of the building itself.

Londres tem uma imensidão de atividades gratuitas disponíveis para quem a visita.
Não sendo uma cidade propriamente “low budget”, é sempre possível poupar algum dinheiro ao usufruir destas vantagens. Nestes 10 ponto estão apenas algumas delas atividades, que tive oportunidade de experimentar e que recomendo.
Caminhada das pontes
Percorrer algumas das pontes mais icónicas de Londres, que atravessam o rio Thames, pode ser uma forma bastante divertida de explorar a cidade. Ao fazê-lo é possível ter diferentes perspetivas da cidade ao longo do rio. Ambas as margens são acessíveis de forma pedonal e a sugestão é que comecem na ponte Westminster e vão fazendo “zig-zag” nas pontes seguintes até chegar à Tower Bridge.
Façam uma paragem mais demorada na Millennium Bridge, ponte exclusivamente pedonal, de onde podem observar pontos marcantes da cidade como o Tate Modern, o The Shakespeare’s Globe e a Catedral de St. Paul.
Hyde Park
Localizado no coração de Londres, é considerado um dos pulmões da cidade.
Vale a pena um passeio pelo parque para desfrutar da natureza, visitar o Memorial da Princesa Diana e quem sabe fazer um discurso no Speakers’ Corner, lugar histórico para discursos e debates públicos desde meados de 1800, quando protestos e manifestações tiveram lugar no Hyde Park.
Museu de História Natural

O Sky Garden é um arranha céus, localizado no centro de Londres, de onde se tem uma vista de 360º da cidade.
No ultimo piso, é possível passear dentro de um jardim interior, uma espécie de estufa, e apreciar a paisagem de cortar a respiração. Aconselho a visita ao final da tarde para verem o por do sol!

Visitar os Mercados
Londres tem inúmeros mercados para visitar de forma gratuita. Desde os mais conhecidos, como o Portobello Road Market, o Camden Market ou o Covent Garden, aos menos turísticos mas igualmente espetaculares como o Borough Market.
Neste ultimo mercado, maioritariamente alimentar, é possível provar algumas iguarias diferentes, como por exemplo cogumelos invulgares.
Explorar Notting Hill
Notting Hill é, provavelmente, o bairro mais conhecido de Londres.
O mais colorido e “instragramável”, palco de diversas produções cinematográficas.
Vale a pena reservar tempo para passear nas suas ruas e conhecer os seus cantos. Logicamente, ninguém vai a Notting Hill e deixa de lado a famosa livraria!
A arte urbana de Shoreditch
Shoreditch é um bairro com menos glamour mas igualmente espetacular.
Ali respira-se arte urbana e ambiente boémio.
Vagueiem nas ruas e apreciem obras de alguns dos artistas mais reconhecidos ao nível da arte urbana.
É como estar numa galeria a céu aberto.
Catedral de St. Paul
Sendo um dos edifícios mais emblemáticos de Londres, localizado no ponto mais alto da cidade, é um dos locais cuja visita é obrigatória.
Visitar o exterior e os jardins da Catedral é gratuito, assim como, visitar a nave central da mesma.
Aproveitem para se deslumbrar com a magnífica arquitetura do edifício.
Big Ben
O Big Ben é, provavelmente, o relógio mais famoso do mundo.
A sua silhueta é imediatamente reconhecível e é um dos marcos mais fotografados do planeta.
Todo o conjunto arquitetónico constituído pela Ponte de Westminster, o Palácio e o Big Ben, são um deslumbre para quem visita aquela zona da cidade.

O Tate é um museu/galeria cuja missão, tal como o seu site descreve, é aumentar o prazer e a compreensão do público sobre a arte britânica desde o século XVI até aos dias de hoje e sobre a arte moderna e contemporânea internacional.
Não percam a visita das obras de arte, mas também do edifício em si.

Enjoyed this roundup of free London sights. Considering how expensive London is in terms of accommodation and food, the plethora of free attractions is much appreciated. We plan to spend most of our London time in the parks, museums and markets. One thing I would add to this list is a few of the cemeteries, especially the amazing Highgate Cemetery.

Wow the Sky Garden looks quite fascinating and so does the History Museum. It’s been a very long time since my last trip to London, I would definitely love to go back one day ☺️

London has an array of free things to do and whenever you come back there seems to be another thing that you could add to the list. From your selection, the Sky Garden is the ultimate steal. I find it is a very good free activity that offers you quite a lot (the views, the flair, the atmosphere). Another one to check out would be a trip on the DLR to Greenwich, then walk the tunnel and enjoy a picnic at the park. I also love all the experiential activations that you can sometimes find around town.
