And like any jewel, it shines not only because of its beauty but also because of the history and devotion it carries.

Legend has it that King Lalibela, after completing the other ten churches, received a visit from St. George, who complained about not having a church in his honor. The king then promised to build the most beautiful church of all for Ethiopia’s patron saint. And he kept his promise.

The church was carved in the shape of a Greek cross, with three levels representing the Holy Trinity. It was carved from a single block of volcanic rock, and its location, in a deep pit, makes it emerge from the ground like a divine sculpture. To reach it, you go down a narrow, winding path that reveals the church little by little as if you were unveiling a sacred secret.

Bete Abba Libanos, on the other hand, is said to have been built in a single night by angels and is shrouded in legends that mix faith, miracles, and a dash of magic.

Diz a lenda que o rei Lalibela, após concluir as outras dez igrejas, recebeu uma visita de São Jorge, que reclamou por não ter uma igreja em sua homenagem. O rei, então, prometeu construir a mais bela de todas as igrejas para o santo padroeiro da Etiópia. E cumpriu a sua promessa.

A igreja foi esculpida em forma de cruz grega, com três níveis que representam a Santíssima Trindade. Foi talhada a partir de um único bloco de rocha vulcânica e a sua localização, num poço profundo, faz com que pareça emergir do solo como uma escultura divina. Para chegar até ela, tem que se descer por um caminho estreito e sinuoso, que revela a igreja aos poucos, como se estivesse a ser desvendado um segredo sagrado.
